LionHeart from the eye of a critic.

 by Goodness Oparah.

Movie: Lionheart (2018)
Cast: Genevieve Nnaji, Nkem Owoh, Pete Edochie, Onyeka Onwenu, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Ngozi Ezeonu, Kalu Ikeagwu, Chibuzo Azubuike, Jemima Osunde, Sani Mua’zu, Yakubu Mohammed, Peter Okoye.
Director: Genevieve Nnaji MFR
Synopsis: Adaeze(Genevieve Nnaji), is a returnee whose ambition is to support and help the Lionheart Company owned by her dad Chief Ernest Obiagu. Despite faced with some opposition from their competitor IG motors owned by Igwe Pascal(Kanayo O. Kanayo) to buy the company after it was discovered it was in debt resulting from a loan taken by her dad, she faces lots of up’s and down with her uncle God’swill Obiagu(Nkem Owoh)who helped her dad manage the business during his brief illness, thus, the battle for who is fit for the seat after Chief retires is drawn. Is the sit fit for a daughter or a brother?
REVIEW
This beautiful story was set in Enugu state and Kano state, depicting the aesthetics in culture, moral values, courage, family, rivalry, business, to mention just a few. Genevieve Nnaji has done well to prove to the hearts of all Nigerians that good stories still exist.
I want to start this paragraph by saying that every work of art is worthy of being criticized and commended, here are some of the problems I observed in the movie.
I noticed that God’s will Obiagu, the brother of the owner of Lionheart did not know that their business had a competitor? And how doesn’t he also know that he know about the loan? Does it mean that Chief Ernest Obiagu is very secretive to his own brother who is helping him run the business in Owerri?
Before I proceed on this one, I would blatantly say that Lion heart lacked proper basic research, this negligence did cost some pound of flesh. I am so not in support of the idea of using external auditors to announce the company’s debt, that is not the work of the external auditors as they are external financial bodies who look into the finances of the company that employed them for its services. Another thing is that, the announcement of the debt reports was supposed to be addressed in a meeting in the hearing of all company shareholder’s and not in the presence of just two people that is Adaeze and God’swill, and also, the external auditors don’t have any right to remind the company of any debt, it is the job of the debt recovery agents to remind company’s of their debt if appointed but if not appointed it is the job of the bank, saying that, the FIRS or loan recovery agencies would have played perfectly well for the role of debt announcement instead of the external auditors. It is also very unrealistic in the business world to collect a huge loan without informing the directors who are also the share holders about a loan which was used to buy more vehicles and maintain the company’s integrity and goals of travelling in comfort and style.
Sad to say this, I do not like the way the bankers were portrayed in this movie. There is also an unrealistic moment in the movie, I doubt if the director of Engineering services, Samuel Akah can call for a board meeting, that is not realistic at all and also I want to state that Igwe Pascal shouldn’t have walked into a meeting where it is being discussed on how he is buying Lionheart.
I know some people will be like how did she get to see that, but the eye of a critic is as sharp as that of an eagle, the news paper section where the article for Maikano Motor’s expansion was typed was under the political arena of the news paper instead of the business arena.
I personally have a problem with where Chief Ernest placed his staff; it wasn’t a proper thing to behold, a walking staff on a meeting table. The staff could have been placed in other places like his side or just on the floor where he can pick it up and use while leaving.
These are the few things that irked me, they were sloppy with no reason, no hard feelings, I hope it sinks down well but all other good deeds I also observed covered the mistakes.
Even after all the criticisms, I will still commend Genevieve and her team for thinking out of the box in terms of story telling, this is the best story I’ve seen in Nollywood, dripping in finesse and expertise, When I was seeing this movie, it had a taste in my mouth and it was a familiar taste, the taste of a sweet, creamy ,smooth candy right in my tongue. The scenes are so smooth that it all registered in my head in a chainlike structure, very tight plot, no loose ends, it just flows. I had no cause to find irrelevant scenes which is like the new trend in Nollywood to accommodate all Nollywood actors in order to make money thus loosing the message and creating weak plot. This film better teach film makers that, the success of a film is not only in the characters but also in the story, the story should be impeccable and stop adding extra scenes just to suit some audience while people like me are busy shaking our heads and waiting for the next original scene. This story is obviously not the Nollywood Cliché narratives, kudos to Genevieve and the team. I would give you all some pecks when we see but you have to permit me to do so Lol!. In my own opinion, Netflix bought this film because of its excellent universal and realistic storyline. I just can’t stop talking about this story, you all who wrote this, you all are very smart and unique and thank you for making me believe in the renaissance that will come in Nollywood’s style of stories after seeing this movie.
I feel that this story is talking to Nigeria and it’s people, the director left a message for we Nigerians instead of giving us the jaw dropping moments or provoking some reactions from us. Lionheart almost collapsed because of the times it was in (recession); surviving became hard because of a new change in the system that was fighting corruption, using the EFCC to check the works of the Federal Ministry of Transportation thereby putting a halt to the BRT project Lionheart was depending on to grow it’s business and pay it’s debt. So on the long run, what saves Lionhheart is the merging of the Maikano motors and Lionheart transport. This implies that we all come together as one to build a better relationship between ethnic groups, not minding our dialects, differences, but minding our dreams to make Nigeria become one and be a better place. There is something more I would have loved to say about this, on the political campaigns this year since the elections are coming soon, but I have to get my readers go ahead order and do some research on it! If my instincts were right, it would be a very good content to create. But nevertheless, I salute Genevieve for a job well done.
The location manager for this movie is actually a woman assisted by a man, no wonder all the locations used were very beautiful and feminine. Wow! “The land is green”, TY Bello was so right about it.
So, Just two editors were able to make this film happen! To George Cragg and Anna Brunstein you two are actually the real MVP’s. Thank you for using the good shots to create stories that have taken Nollywood on Netflix. I know what it means to be an editor for just a semester and that’s definitely not my calling, let me just manage my photo grid app to make short videos! I’m like 100% sure it was an Apple Laptop that was used to edit this wonderful film and whatever editing app you used, I guess it may be Adobe creative cloud Premiere Pro, whatever skill and color grading you employed to edit this movie was actually the very best.
The people behind the camera did a good job too, well done guys, more wins and kills, the drone pilot is such a smooth pilot, he filmed the environments in the most amazing way, I know it’s not easy to carry all those giant Camera’s position but the director of photography is a skilled man, the sound and motion were synchronizing and they were no lapses anywhere.  Even the Continuity manager was too accurate, you’re lucky I did not catch any kind of change or disparity, because I love laughing at imperfections, no need to kill myself because that’s what makes us humans, but I’m not saying you are a robot either.
Guess the color I fell in love with in this movie?, if you guessed Sea Green then give yourself a high five! Sea Green is the most common color that was really played with, the actor’s fabrics were neat, the production designer/set designers played a good role in creating nice mise en scenes, especially in the office. Very simple colors that are very warm to the eyes.  The natural light created by God was utilized and other artificial lighting made this production wonderful to behold, the light did the job of exposing all the corners of the rooms and without concealing of actors or objects. I was checking the cast and crew for the prop’s manager and saw a popular name, “Gabazinni” and I smiled because I’ve actually seen his works and I’m so happy for him because he did a nice job and will always do a nice job. I love the simplicity of all the props in the rooms, especially the dining room, I love those family portraits at the background, and the frames and pictures were so fine that I took my eyes off the Ukwa and Abacha meal for some seconds.
I’m glad to say I’d rather watch Lionheart every day I want to rock my natural hair than go see a video on YouTube for styles, The Olive tree hair clinic did a nice work in styling Adaeze’s hair. To all my natural sisters in the building, our new year resolution this 2019 is to always sleep having our hair inside a silk scarf or cap to protect our hair just like Adaeze, because of this movie, I’m so motivated to try new things this year, I’m not even going to forget the moral values and virtues I learnt from Adaeze.  I have learnt to have a lion heart just like the name of the film, I’m going to be that strong lady and so will my readers also be because this year we came through alive just like God predestined. Although Adaeze was not so good in having patience,  but I’m glad she saw her dad chatting and laughing with Alahaji at the end of the day. but all these flaws are what makes one strong.
Whatever style of casting that was used was very favorable and fit for the actors to play, character interpretation was very excellent, but my award for best character interpretation goes to Onyinye, Adaeze’s secretray. You killed your role! I would also give you a peck when I get to see you.
Character relationships and chemistry is very realistic, the characters were calm and did well to deliver their lines normally just like the normal day to day conversations. For example, Adaeze always behave the same way I behave around my uncle’s, her relationship with her brother Obiora was really cool as Obiora sees her as a mediator who can help him beg their dad for funds to shoot his musical videos. The mother-daughter relationship between Adaeze and her mother is just a goal! Mothers should always encourage and support their children’s dreams no matter how little or insignificant it may look, because a journey of a thousand miles starts with a step. It was really impressed to see Abigail dancing and vibing to her son’s song in the studio as she also had to leave to attend to her daughter who was having a hard time at work because of the loan debt. She is always available for her children and that is what makes a woman a mother! I can’t start listing all the good chemistry so I don’t bore you with plenty stories.
I love the tempo of the movie, like I said earlier; this movie tastes like a sweet, creamy, smooth candy in my tongue. I love the taste because it so unique and rich in flavor.
In saying that, I recommend this beautiful movie to all Nigerians, are you an aspiring business tycoon or already one, this is definitely the movie for you. It is a movie that everyone can relate with in one way or the other, sometimes I find myself in Adaeze’s shoes, but when the shoes get too big to wear, I slide out to learn from her. And finally, let’s all support our own by seeing the movie in the cinema’s and on Netflix and shun piracy too because a lot of money went into the production of this movie and as such, let us not reap were we did not sow.
GOD BLESS NOLLYWOOD! GOD BLESS NIGERIA!
